AIIMS Mangalagiri

Wayfinding and signage system designed for AIIMS Mangalagiri as part of an academic project and proposed for implementation at the campus.

CLIENT

AIIMS, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, is one of India’s leading public healthcare institutions. AIIMS Mangalagiri provides accessible, high-quality medical care, especially for lower-middle-class families and people living below the poverty line. With a large campus and heavy footfall, clear wayfinding is essential for patients, visitors, and staff.

And like many hospitals, it can feel overwhelming for first-time visitors. Long corridors, similar-looking blocks, and unfamiliar medical terms often add to the confusion. Our goal was to create a wayfinding system that feels calm, welcoming, and easy to understand, even for someone walking in with stress or limited literacy.

We began by observing how different users move through the space: the routes they take, where they hesitate, and the points where guidance is most needed. Based on these insights, we designed a set of simple, highly legible symbols that work across languages and age groups. The icons follow a consistent visual grid, forming a cohesive family, and their clean forms support quick recognition in busy environments.

Colour played an important role in making navigation intuitive. We developed a palette that feels professional and soothing, helping users identify departments without adding visual noise. Typography and layout were kept straightforward so information remains readable from a distance and in low-attention situations.

The system was developed specifically for one department within the campus, covering key touchpoints like directional boards, room identifiers, and essential symbols. Each element was designed to guide users clearly and calmly through that section, reducing confusion and creating a more organised flow within the space.

This project taught  me how deeply design can influence the emotional experience of a space. Good wayfinding does more than show directions; it reduces stress, builds trust, and provides comfort in environments where people often feel vulnerable.
